Millivolt (standing pilot) fireplaces use a thermopile: it must make about 600–750 mV open circuit and hold roughly 350–450 mV with the valve energized. Low output, a dirty wall switch, or loose wires keep the burner off.
IPI (electronic) fireplaces use a control module, a flame sensor, and a 3V/6V battery pack or transformer. If the pilot lights but the burner never opens, clean the sensor, check the module ground, replace batteries, and test the main valve coil.
